for those people who are interested, i've sent an update to
crowdsupply and another one today about shenzen.

joe, you're right: internet connectivity between china and the rest of
the world is massively-truncated. the effect is quite dramatic and
goes a long way to explaining the entire economic situation here.
businesses can't do business, basically.

have found some parts suppliers, they're documented here
http://rhombus-tech.net/suppliers/shenzen/

Hmmm...

I believe the connectivity problem is down to the vast
numbers of windumb botnets trying to get traffic
in and out of CN and most of the Far East nations
through international links.
(Wireshark will verify that.)

Got a site that isn't live yet but the bot traffic
from EC2 (Amzn) is just amazing - its all scripted and
timed - you would think the ISPs and server space providers
would block the URLs based on known attack pattern
and get rid of this traffic to free up the international
links by now :(

Anyway to business - the business cards you are uploading
are bad resolution - a sub $200 4G phone can over fix that.
Amazon CN deliver twice per day :)

If you can get to the Shenzhen SEG market - very tall building.
Big adventure in there.
If you want best prices for low tech items such
as connectors, capacitors etc, stand outside the SEG building
at the busiest traffic street corner that faces the SEG building
entrance.
Then look left and see obscure looking low rise building.
Cross road and go to the ground floor and never look back.
Its tech nirvana in there. Need 2 or more days to
look over it.

does it come unlocked, support total replacement of the OS down to
the bedrock, and provide the full source of all firmware for all
on-board ICs? i know the answer's no, so I won't be getting one.

honestly, i'm done. the ladies from jihang, as mike explained today,
appear to be part of a.. what's the word... there's many groups of
people like them - a cooperative if you will - where they all share
the same database. except the owner of jihang electronics has pretty
much memorised the *entire* database.

that and the fact that they were willing to be there during the
holidays, tells me what i need to know. they had time for a westerner
(me), when several of the suppliers were really very rude (clearly
didn't want any business).

now, if i was looking to source 100,000 components it would be a
different matter: i'd go haggling on price. but honestly it's worth
paying a small percentage more just to be able to go to the one single
supplier.

Avoid conclusions - they may not know English and
instructed / can't deal with you. Or they been burned by previous
westerners and too tired / bored with it all.
The way to break ice is to buy 100 pieces of something you
like to ship back to hope you can find a use for it.
Having a CN friend there to chat works better - proper
respectful introductions are important. They can be senior
staff and paying a fortune to be in that building in relative terms
and representing a factory of several hundred to thousands of people.

QA everything - hire a QA guy if you can.
Avoid blaming the supplier for anything that goes wrong - just say thank
you, and say what changes your want to make it better. They will try
their utmost to get it right.

i was there during the holiday. they had all the time in the world.
if they weren't prepared to make the effort, i am happy to find
someone who is. simple filter.

is the firmware available for the camera? is the driver source code
available? is the source code fully GPL-compliant? i'm not playing
the illegal software game any more, joe. i've absolutely had it with
them.

Hmmm... then buy one of those cool colour OLED watch cams - or a boring
cam with enough resolution.

it's another item to carry (and/or forget and/or have stolen) - my
rucksack was already packed out.

been doing photos and videos for the crowdfunding campaign and for
here on rhombus-tech for four years: if i had room for the camera i
would have brought it with me, joe. appreciate the thought though.

i'm planning to make one using a parallel CSI interface connected to
an ingenic M150. 128mb of RAM on-board, can do hardware encoding.

That would really set the device apart Andrew. I searched for a camera that saves video in webm once. I could only find the Elphel camera, which is expensive and requires further work to make it usable as a stand-alone cam.

Sounds brill. looking forward to it :D.
btw i believe/hope its possible to use hardware encoders for vp8/9. with
ingenic’s generic hw encoder, i guess its a matter of software?
if not what about theora?

cus with these formats, commercial operations using the camera dont have
to pay protection money to mpeg-la mafia :)
